Consequences Of Adoption Of Older Child – How To Deal With Them?
Many people feel that the adoption of older child is a bit more complex than that of infant adoption. There are many types of outcomes of this kind of adoptions and there are some points to be remembered while opting for such adoptions. The thing which has to be done before the process of adoptions commence, is to make the older child ready to be adopted. He or she should be well informed of the fact that they are being adopted and this is the first step to be followed. They might have different opinion about the adoptions and hence might not want to be adopted. They might have been rejected by their birthparents and hence they might not be ready to get in to family type of lifestyle.

Many of the older children who are desperate might not be willing to be adopted because they have various kinds of emotional baggage which prevents them to have bondage with other people. It is difficult for the prospective parents to get closer to the older child adopted, who has negative feeling towards adoption. In case of infant adoption, they will not be knowing the difference between birth parents and the adoptive parents and hence can easily bond with their adoptive parents. By the time they reach the age of understanding the difference between the prospective parents and the birth parents, they would have experienced the love and affection of their prospective parents and hence will be satisfied with them. But in the case of older child adoption, it is not the same case. He or she will be knowing that the prospective parents are not their birth parents. Older children should be given chance to select their prospective parents among the applicants, so that there is positive response from their side in getting closer to the family. The older child has to be made an active part in the process of adoptions and their views and opinions have to be given value. They will be much co operative in the process when they feel that their say has some value and has been considered. Behavior problems are the main problem seen with the older child adopted. This is because he or she might not yet acquainted to the new environment and the new family. Until the adopted child gets well versed with the family members and the environment, the family members should pay extra care in this regard.
Because of the reason that the older child adopted will be entering in to their adolescence, their behavior changes. Adoptive parents should be patient and have respond in a positive way to these changes and have to take care in molding the child got through adoption, to develop good character, good attitude and to excel in their performance. In many cases, these behavioral changes are seen in children when entering adolescence, even when they are with their birth parents. In case of the child adopted from a foreign country, there would be another problem in the form of language difference and communication gap.
